THE SHOW

Right up until the 19th century, West Africa was an important node in the world economy. A lot of wealth was created in the continent and a lot of money flowed into West Africa through trading activities with the Atlantic and Saharan frontiers. Yet, we all know the story today. Two decades into the 21st century and Africa is the poorest region in the world. So what the heck happened?

THE FIRST COLLECTION: MONEY

In this first collection of Money No Get Enemy, we start with the money itself. West African history is full of examples of currency systems that are very different from the one that we know today. And they’re not ancient. You only need to go a handful of generations back to see how incredibly diverse monetary systems can be. So join us in the next eleven episodes as we learn about the West African mine that, at one point, supplied the world’s gold; the bitcoin of the sixteenth and seventeenth century; the richest man that ever lived; and even, believe it or not, a type of money that can get you drunk.
